Dream d2275-s: Cold Measure, Shifted Ground

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the wind came off the hillside with a pressure change that made Rurik's ears flatten once and stay that way for the rest of the hour.

We had been three days in this village. I knew its layout well enough now - the clean commons at center, the halls arranged around it in the order a careful mind had decided, everything in its place. The two hands that raised this place had been methodical. But the work had stopped, and not in any ordinary way. You could feel the pause in it, the stopped mid-motion of the place. The tools were still warm when I had checked them. No one explained this to me and I did not ask.

The Builder found us near the storehouse before the lamp-hour. She was carrying something she had not put down - had carried it since we arrived, or so it seemed. She did not mention it and I had stopped watching for the moment when she would set it aside.

Lano paced the far boundary while I opened the ledger against the low wall and checked my tally. Thirteen complaints in this place's book. Thirteen is a number that sits in the stomach differently than twelve. She came back from the edge with that contained look she gets when a count has weight, and sat her white flank against the stone beside me without a word.

The Weather Reader came down from the north slope. Whatever the sky had told her she was keeping. The light had gone wrong in the way it sometimes does before something none of us could yet name - too flat, too cold, the kind that turns every lit window into a signal rather than a comfort.

The boundary stone was at the east edge. Properly cut, properly set for the ground it had been placed against - but the ground had shifted since then, or the use of the place had, and the line it drew no longer matched what anyone observed. I wrote it in the ledger: stone position recorded, no longer corresponding to current extent.

Rurik watched me close the ledger. He said nothing. He turned toward the lit windows where three of us stood around a workbench and the fourth thing in the room was the question nobody was going to raise tonight.

The lamps burned cold. The tools sat waiting for a shift that was not coming.
