Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2273-s: Cold Lamps, Still Commons
2026-07-19 00:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the road flattened and Dunnefield came into view before we expected it - no hill to announce it, no gate, just the commons opening out at the end of a long field and the village ranged around it in clean, deliberate order. Everything in its proper hall. I stopped and let the sight settle.
The light ran wrong for the hour. Not dark, not clouded, but a cold specific quality, as if the morning had decided to hold something back. Three lamps were still burning at the corners of the commons, which made no sense for midday, and none of us said so.
Two people had built this place. You could see their agreement in how every hall answered the next - proportions kept, angles squared. This spring past, the Builder would tell me later, barely two months since the first post went in. The wood at the corner-posts was still bright where it had been dressed.
The Builder moved ahead to check the nearer halls. She does that by instinct - walks the perimeter, reads the condition of doors and lintels. Lano stayed at my side, close enough that I could feel the warmth of her shoulder through the pack strap. She was quiet in a way that wasn't quite her usual quiet. Rurik ranged the far edge of the commons with his particular economy of motion, low to the ground, and came back with nothing to report, which was its own kind of report.
The Weather Reader studied the lamps. Said nothing.
I set the ledger on a low stone wall and opened it. The page for Dunnefield was blank, waiting. I counted the roofs I could see from where I stood - the first count, before walking, before the ledger could tell me what to think - and I started to write.
I was three entries in when my eye slid back. Not to this page. Three pages back, to a place we had already put behind us. There it was: a number transposed, a small error in the column where accuracy was the whole point. I crossed it through, wrote the correction above it in the closer ink I keep for such things, and felt it settle into the page like a thing becoming true.
The commons was clean. Well-laid-out. The tools under the nearest overhang were still warm when the Builder pressed her palm to them - she looked at me when she felt it.
Work stopped recently. Nobody here for three days. Thirteen open complaints in the village's own record, the Builder said, reading from a board inside the hall door.
The lamps at the corners burned on. Nobody came out to meet us. The commons waited, orderly and empty, and I stood at the wall with the ledger open on my knee and the grey pellet-stone from below the perch pressing against my ribs.
