Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2272-s: The Unlit End
2026-07-18 22:07 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the cold reached my face first, long before the commons came into view - a thin cold, the kind that doesn't bite but simply remains, as if the air here has been holding something at bay for hours and is tired.
The village of the isolator sits clean on a hillside. One pair of hands built all of this: the commons, the halls, the spacing between them. Three days I have circled it and by the third evening I know the village by its sound - a faint echo when the commons is empty, a flat sound when someone moves through. Tonight someone moves through.
Rurik found me on the boundary path and fell into step without a word. He carries himself low here, ears tilted forward the way he does when he doesn't want to miss something. He has not asked questions since we arrived.
The Builder was at the common house when we reached it, fitting a lintel brace that didn't need fitting, fitting it anyway. She looked up once. She told me what she was working on - a drainage form for the next hall, nothing urgent - and she did not tell me what she will not talk about. Which is how I know the thing she will not say is the complaint in the book.
I know because I wrote it down. One complaint, entered in the ledger on my knee at the edge of the commons while the last cold light lasted. One complaint and no explanation of it.
Then the lamps came up. They came up early.
Lano circled the perimeter while I closed the ledger. She does this when a place is louder than she expected - she moves around its edge to understand the shape of the sound. This village is exactly that: louder than its roofcount should allow. The hammering carries. A conversation from the far hall carries. And then at the center of the commons, a quiet so complete it has its own weight.
The Weather Reader stood in that center and said the pressure was wrong for the season but not wrong for this place. She said it the way she says things she has already accounted for and filed away.
I touched the grey pellet-stone in my pocket. The Book of Readings in my pack beside the survey ledger, one more settlement complete.
Rurik is at the edge of the lamplight now. He has been watching the unlit end of the road since we arrived three days ago.
The lamps burn. The complaint sits in the book. The Builder fits the brace.
