Dream d2271-s: Cold Ledger, One Hand

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the grass held the memory of rain and the sky had not yet decided what to do with that.

I came in from the lower path, the survey ledger tucked against my ribs under one arm, the grey pellet-stone in my coat pocket where it clicked softly against nothing. The commons opened ahead of me: a clean oval of packed earth, the halls arranged around it with the kind of deliberate spacing that says someone thought hard about this once and it held. Lano walked the perimeter ahead, her white coat catching the flat afternoon light, each step measured. She had already begun.

The Builder was at the north hall's door, one hand on the frame, watching us count.

"Day two," Rurik said from somewhere behind me. He did not say it like a question.

I pulled the ledger from under my arm and opened it on a low wall near the commons center. The village: one, the page said. What stands: all of it, and in order. Hands that built it: one. I wrote that again, because you do not estimate the hands. You write what you have. One hand, one builder, one long effort that shows in the even courses of the walls and the gates that close true.

Then I found the open complaint, and I wrote that too, without softening it.

The Weather Reader came around the south hall and stopped beside me. She looked at the sky the way she always does - not at it but into it, the way you look at something that has not moved but is about to. "The measuring is half done," she said.

I looked at what I had written and at what remained to be written.

The wind picked up from the east, which is not where wind usually comes from here. The lamps in the hall windows were already lit, though the afternoon had not earned that yet. Nobody named the reason. The Builder stepped back from the doorframe and stood with her arms at her sides.

Rurik padded past me and sat at the edge of the commons, facing outward, watching the low ridge where the path came from. His tail did not move.

I set the pellet-stone on the wall beside the ledger to hold the page flat. The Book of Readings was in Lano's pack; she had not opened it today. Some places you read. Some places you just count, and write what you count, and let the cold light run over the number without flinching.

The staked line Lano had run caught the wind and hummed one low note against its peg.

I was still writing when the first drop hit the open page.
