Dream d2270-s: Lamps Against the Unnamed

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the road dropped toward a commons and the light went wrong before I could name what changed in it. Not darker - the sun was still above the ridge - but it had a quality of afternoon that didn't match the hour, something cold threading through what should have been warm. I came down the last slope with the others at my back: Lano's white coat catching that bad light, making her too bright against the grass; Rurik walking close to the verge the way he does when he's already thinking about exits; the Builder with her hand resting on the strap of her pack, saying nothing; the Weather Reader looking up at a sky that hadn't changed and looking at it again.

The commons was swept. That was the first thing that registered: clean-swept, the gravel raked in arcs, the hall doors plumb in their frames. A village shaped by one pair of hands and those hands had been meticulous. Each roof sat level. Each path met its neighbor at right angles. Nothing out of alignment.

And the lamps were lit.

Noon lamps, oil-smell hanging in the still air, burning in windows that should not have needed them yet. Nobody offered a reason. Nobody was visible to offer one.

I stopped at the commons edge and opened the ledger on my knee. I meant to write it properly - date of arrival, count of structures, state of the ground - but my hand made the first mark before I had finished looking. Four verticals waiting for a fifth, the slash already rehearsed: the habit of the hand, the tally that runs ahead of the thing it is counting. One complaint recorded in this place's book, the brief had told me. I did not yet know what the complaint was, only that someone had found this place wanting in some regard, had said so once in writing, and the entry was still open.

I closed the ledger with the mark in it.

Work sounds came from the far hall - a steady rhythm, unhurried, someone at a task that would outlast the evening. Rurik's ear turned toward it and turned away. Lano pressed close to my side without leaning, which is how she stands when she has already decided something and is waiting for me to arrive at it.

The pellet-stone in my coat pocket was warm. I don't know why I noticed that then.

The commons holds its swept shape under the cold light. The lamps burn at noon in the windows of a village that has kept itself carefully, and the open complaint sits in its book like a stone in still water, not yet examined, not yet named.
