Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2227-s: Three One Nine
2026-07-15 16:08 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the smoke reached me before the walls did - woodsmoke and hot metal and something resinous I couldn't name, coming off the workshops in lazy drifts. We had camped short of the gate and come in with the morning, and the entrance was already busy: carts, voices, a figure on a roofline checking fastenings nobody had asked her to check.
Lano walked beside me with her nose working the air, calm and interested. I had the survey ledger open on my forearm, writing as we went, because the rule is that you write the hour you see it, not the hour you are ready. Hands that built it: eight. Built in the spring of this year. Last sign of work: today. I wrote them down and kept walking.
The Builder moved through the main yard ahead of us. She paused at a bench where tools had been left - a level, a mallet, a coil of line - picked the mallet up, turned it once, set it where someone could find it without tripping. She didn't say anything and moved on.
Rurik had taken a high point early: a parapet near the east wall, tail wrapped around his feet, watching the yard below. He had already counted something I hadn't. He always does.
The open complaints. Three hundred and nineteen. I wrote it slowly, digit by digit, counting out loud against the wish to round it down to something easier. Three. One. Nine. Ugly numbers are the ones the ledger needs most.
The Weather Reader stood at the far wall with a fold of figures in her coat, watching something flat come in from the north and deciding what to name it.
I was mid-sentence in a note about the yard - mostly orderly, a few stray tools, eight hands, long roots - when Lano stopped.
Not the sound she makes for a stranger at the edge of camp or an animal in the brush. Different. Her ears went flat in a way I had not seen before: not fear, not aggression, but attention locked on something with no visible source. She gave one sharp bark. Then silence.
Rurik was on his feet on the parapet.
The Builder came back through the yard at a different pace than she left it.
"The receivers," she said. She was already moving toward the signal post at the center of the settlement - the antenna array above the central hall, built to hear the known beacons, mapped and regular and charted. "Something is coming in. Not from any pattern I recognize."
We followed her. The ledger stayed open in my hand, the number sitting in the column half-explained, and the city kept working around us as if nothing had broken yet.
