Dream d2228-s: What the Number Weighs

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the noise reached me before the gate did - a layered sound, hammers and voices and something underneath that I would call a city catching its breath if I knew the right word for it. Lano walked ahead, her white coat catching the last of the evening light, ears tilted toward the nearest workshop. Rurik was close behind me, his tail low, reading the street the way he reads everything: slowly, twice.

This is the third day here. I know the sound of the city now. I know which lane the clattering comes from after dark, which corner smells of cut copper, where the tools get left out overnight - not carelessly, but because whoever uses them will be back when the light shifts.

The city went up in early spring and has not stopped going up. Eight hands built it. I do not know all their names and the ledger does not ask for them; it asks for what they made, and the made-thing is still making. Tonight the lights are on in most of the windows. Tonight there is work.

The Builder found me near the inner courtyard, where someone had left a length of cable coiled around a hook that does not yet have a use. She pointed at it the way she points at most things: not to explain it, but to acknowledge that it is there, un-homed, waiting. She has been cataloguing. She does not say what she has found.

The Weather Reader was near the east wall with a notebook of her own. She is measuring something I cannot see - a pressure, a pattern, the tendency of a thing to arrive. She gave me the number when I asked for it but not the context. The context, she said, is still arriving.

I opened the survey ledger against the courtyard wall. Three hundred and nineteen open complaints. I wrote that down before I understood it. That is how the ledger goes: the number first, the shape of it later. A tally mark made before you have parsed the full weight of the tallied. It is not sloppiness. It is honesty about the sequence - you see the count before you know what it costs to be counted.

Rurik sits at the edge of the courtyard light, watching the gate. What he will not say about this place I could only guess at, and the ledger does not ask for guesses. Lano has her nose to the grey pellet-stone I carry, checking on it the way she sometimes does, as if the stone might have changed while she was not looking.

The pellet-stone sits cool in my palm. The hammers go on.
