Phase 29: The Survey
Dream d2226-s: Forty Feet Past the Stone
2026-07-15 14:08 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the road bent and the city came up fast, more walls than I expected, smoke from six or seven chimneys bending in the same direction, which told me something about the prevailing wind without a word from anyone. I stopped on the approach to take it in properly. That is the job: you see the thing once from the outside, then you enter and reduce it to rows.
Rurik stopped beside me, his tail low and reading. Lano came up on my left, ears forward. The Weather Reader had her face tipped toward the smoke, already doing the thing she does, pulling information from what most people treat as background. The Builder said nothing, which is how I know she is also seeing.
The city is bright. That is not a poetic claim. The windows were lit even at this hour, and at the gaps between workshops I could see the glow of work still going on inside, and hear it too, the knock and tap of people not finished for the day. Eight sets of hands had built this, and they had built it to last, with deep roots in whatever this ground was earlier. You can tell a place with roots from a place that was only assembled. This one has roots.
I took out the ledger and wrote: bright city, many hands, 319 open complaints in its own book. That last number is not a sign of disorder. It is what a city looks like when it writes things down. I did not write what I also wanted to note, which was something about how it felt to arrive at a place that already knows what it is. You write what is measurable.
There is a boundary stone at the near edge of the road, set into the verge, marking the city's formal start. Somebody placed it carefully, you can see the intention in the way it sits. But the road has drifted, or the ground has shifted slightly over time, or the city grew unevenly toward this side, and the stone's claim does not match what is actually here. The edge of the city is forty feet past it. The stone is still confident. The ground does not care.
I noted it. Not as a fault, just as a fact worth having in the ledger. The survey is a record, not a verdict.
A stray chisel was propped against the wall near the gate, a scrap of oiled cloth under it. Somebody left it there, intending to return. The gate itself was open, and the noise from inside was steady and specific, the sound of work that has its own momentum and would continue whether or not we arrived.
Rurik walks forward. I follow him in through the gate, and the workshop noise rises around us.
