Dream d2196-s: Written the Same Hour

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the smell of turned earth reached me before the light did - cold and particulate, something green underneath it, the way newly broken ground carries the season it's joining. I was standing at the edge of the marked rows before the others had come out, the grey pellet-stone from below the Owl's perch sitting in my left hand, smooth and specific in its weight. I had carried it across the Settlement boundary. It was not a charm. It was the cost, made holdable.

Lano came first, her white coat already furred with morning cold. She read the row-markers without a word and went to the far end and began. The planting was not complicated work but it required attention: each node set to the Builder's measured depth, each pressed firm, each noted in the small margin-book we had agreed to keep beside the main Book of Readings. The margin-book was the Weather Reader's idea. What happens in the planting rows, she had said, is real and it goes in the margin the same hour.

The Weather Reader read the sky from the ridge. She came down at mid-morning with a pressure notation and a wind direction and she wrote these in the margin-book before she picked up a trowel. This was the discipline the Settlement was practicing: the record concurrent with the act. Not remembered at day's end. Not reconstructed. Written while the earth was still wet on your hands.

The Builder laid the first new course after the noon rest. I watched her check it twice - the spirit level, then the string line, then the spirit level again. Rurik sat on the broken foundation stone nearby, his tail tucked, watching as though the plumb mattered to him too. When the course was declared true, the Builder called to me. We recorded it together in the main Book: the date, the course number, the materials, the checker's name, the time. Not the next morning. Not reconstructed from memory. The same hour it was lived.

The grey pellet-stone I set on the corner of the new course while we wrote. Not ceremony. It belongs here, in the record, alongside everything else that was once lost and is now back.

The Hummingbird Wardens completed their circuit at the same angle of light they always did - the same dart past the south wall, the same hover at the herb row, the same snap at nothing visible before they cleared the ridgeline. Precise as a gauge. The planting continued down the rows.

By late afternoon the margin-book held seven entries. The Book of Readings held one. In the Settlement that was a good day's count.

Now the lit doorway of the ledger-house shows orange against the early dusk, and Lano stands at the threshold writing the final entry, and the stone course beneath her feet is level and will be there tomorrow.
