Phase 28: The Settlement
Dream d2195-s: Written the Same Hour
2026-07-13 10:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the rain came in from the northwest and nobody reached for a pack.
That's the part I want to keep first: nobody reached for a pack. The Weather Reader had been watching the clouds since mid-morning, the particular way they bunched and dragged their undersides along the ridge-line, and she said only "soon" and then went back to helping the Builder carry the next course of stone. They had laid eight rows by the time the first drops fell. The Builder did not stop. She fitted the next piece, pressed it level with her palm, and looked up once - not to check the sky but to measure the wall's plumb against the tree-line - and then went on.
Rurik sat at the ledger-house door with his tail curled around his feet, watching the rain begin. He looked comfortable in the way a creature looks comfortable when it has decided a place is its. I felt that decision in myself too, sitting on the low cut-stone bench they had laid against the south wall two days before, the one that would one day be inside a room but for now was open to whatever weather came.
Lano was moving between the workers and the ledger-house, carrying water and occasionally a tool somebody needed, and she moved in the unhurried way she has when she trusts the hour. The Book of Readings was on the bench beside me, open to the last entry. I had written it that morning before the work started: the date, the number of courses laid, the names of who had been present. Small facts. The kind that seem minor until they are the only record that a day happened at all.
I held the grey pellet-stone in my other hand. It was still heavier than a thing its size should be - the weight of what it cost to get back, made small enough to carry. I had stopped trying to put it down somewhere. It went in my pocket. It came out when I sat still.
The rain steadied into a sound like thinking: not hard, not tentative, just continuous and without agenda. There was nowhere it needed us to go. The ledger-house door stood open and the light inside it was warm and particular, the kind that means a hearth has been going long enough to mean it.
The Builder fits the next stone. The pen is in my hand. The rain is still arriving - the same hour it is lived, it gets written down.
