Dream d2197-s: Courses Laid to Stay

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the work was the quiet kind - no milestone, no arrival, just the honest progress of hands that know what they are doing and do not need to be watched.

The Builder set the plumb at first light and did not lift it until the course was true. She works without hurry, which is not the same as working slowly: every block seated, every gap tamped, and the mortar pressed clean at the edge so it does not swell and crack in the cold. The Weather Reader stood east, reading the sky the way she reads everything - not for alarm, only for the shape of what was coming so no one would be caught unprepared. Lano moved between the two of them, carrying water in a flat-bottomed vessel she balanced on one arm, and she did not spill. Rurik sat at the corner of the ledger-house foundation and watched the mortar cure, which is a useful thing to watch and which suits him.

I carried the grey pellet-stone in my pocket all day. It is not heavy by weight but it is heavy by what it is, and I found myself checking for it the way you check for something you cannot afford to lose.

At dusk the Builder drove the last pin and stepped back. The ledger-house stood complete in outline - the walls to course-height, the doorway cut, the threshold flat and level. We did not mark the moment with words. The Builder set down the plumb and picked up her water cup and that was the ceremony.

The Hummingbird Wardens came through on their evening circuit, east to west along the line of the new wall, each pair moving at the same interval as the last, precise as a gauge. One banked at the corner where the mortar was freshest and snapped at something I did not see - an ember-blight spark, maybe, or nothing, and the action was the same either way. Then they were gone into the treeline.

Inside, the Book of Readings sat open on the sill the Weather Reader had laid flat for the purpose, and she wrote while the light held. I watched her hand move across the page. Not catching up - she had kept pace all day, entering each small thing as it happened: the plumb true, the first course set, the second, the third. No entry was crowded. The gaps where the unwritten grove-days had been were smooth and did not pull at anything.

Rurik stepped into the doorway and looked at the page and did not say anything.

Lamplight comes after dark. Right now there is still the last blue of the evening, and the ink is wet, and the day's record is not yet closed.
