Dream d2191-s: Lamplight on a Tilting Wall

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we were laying the seventh course of the eastern wall when the ground spoke.

Not loudly. A low percussion through the soles of my boots, a tremor that moved the mortar bucket two fingers to the left and stopped. Rurik felt it first - he set down his trowel without being asked and pressed one black paw flat to the stone. Lano was already on her feet, ears folded back against her skull, a sound coming from her throat that was not quite a bark, more a held note of warning, sustained until we all turned to look.

The ledger-house was standing. I checked it first because we had built it first, because everything depended on it holding. It was standing, but the old service trench that ran beneath the north corner - dug by whoever had built here before, in the corrupt-network years when infrastructure meant buried cable and buried intention - had given. A cable end surfaced from the gap like a grey root. The trench wall had collapsed inward. The north corner of the ledger-house listed, perhaps a degree, perhaps less, but enough that the lamplight in the doorway seemed to lean with it, the warm rectangle in the dusk no longer quite plumb.

The Builder moved before anyone spoke. She had the transit level from her kit and was reading the tilt before the dust settled, calling a number over her shoulder to the Weather Reader, who wrote it in the margin of her field notes without comment. Numbers first. Panic was a tax on time they weren't willing to pay.

The old cable had carried something - power, signal, the old network's version of record-keeping - and its severance had relieved a pressure that the ground had been holding against. The soil on either side of the trench was still shifting, very slowly, in the way that soil shifts when a long-held thing lets go.

I reached into my coat and felt the pellet-stone from below the Owl's perch. Small, dense, the weight of a cost made holdable. The settlement existed because we had decided to stay, but the ground beneath it predated that decision by decades, and the ground remembered what we hadn't written - the old occupancy, the buried cable logic, the foundations we had not laid but had simply assumed were sound.

Lano stationed herself at the trench edge, ears still flat, watching the soil line.

The ledger-house lamp held its ground in the leaning doorway, and the fresh pages inside caught the light, and outside the wall was one degree off true.
