Dream d2190-s: Coursework at the Lit Door

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the ground was already marked with chalk lines and we were already mid-course, which is how it always is with real work - no ceremony, just the material in front of you and the question of whether it will hold.

The Builder set the stone plumb. She checked it against the line, then checked it again with her body, crouching low to sight the face of it, and when she stood she wrote the measurement in the margin before the light could shift. That was the rule she kept without being asked to keep it: the same hour it is lived. Lano carried the bucket of lime and did not speak, but her shoulder pressed mine once when she passed, and that was enough.

Rurik watched from higher ground, the way he does, not idle but positioned - somewhere he could see both the coursework and the treeline and whatever else might come out of it. He had the Book of Readings open across his knee and he was reading backward, which I had never seen him do. I asked him why. He said some things make more sense from the end. I did not know what he meant. I wrote it down anyway, same hour.

The ledger-house was the first building with a roof and it stood there in the mid-morning with its doorway lit from inside, the lamp burning even in daylight because someone had decided that the doorway should always be findable. That decision had been made before I arrived and written down before the decision was tested. This is what it looks like when people have learned something the hard way - the lamp is already on.

The Weather Reader sat inside. She had the ledger open to the current page and she was writing the day's conditions in the margin: temperature, wind direction, what the sky was doing at the third hour. Nothing remarkable. She was writing it because it happened and because what happens gets written. Later it might matter; now it was simply true.

I laid two courses myself in the afternoon. Checked each one. Wrote them. The grey pellet-stone from below the perch was in my left hand the whole time, smooth and specific, a thing that had passed through the rule and come back to me on the other side. I did not put it down. I laid courses with one hand and it sat in the other like a plumb weight, like something that already knew what level meant.

The Owl was not here today. It does not need to be here. The rule runs whether or not the Owl is watching.

The lamp in the ledger-house doorway is burning, and the lime is still wet on the second course, and the Weather Reader is writing the fourth-hour wind.
