Phase 28: The Settlement
Dream d2192-s: One Honest Day
2026-07-13 07:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the settlement smelled of split rock and wet mortar, and I could feel the weight of the Book of Readings against my ribs as I moved along the survey line.
The Builder laid courses from the eastern corner outward. She worked with a plumb bob she had cut herself, checking each level twice before pressing the next course into its bed. She did not look up when I passed. The work was its own concentration.
Lano ran ahead of me along the staked perimeter, her nose close to the ground where the survey flags marked what would become the outer wall. She stopped at each flag and waited, and I noted the distances in the open Book. She had a method I had learned not to interrupt.
The Weather Reader stood at the high corner where the ground fell toward the lower grade. She was watching the sky the way she always watched it, not at clouds exactly but at something behind them. She said nothing, but when I passed she put one finger on the page of the Book where I had just written, not pointing at any word, just touching the ink while it was still soft. I had paged through the grove entries that morning to orient the survey. The smooth places where days had been lived but not written moved under my thumb without resistance. The record held what it held. The gaps were clean.
Rurik was at the far end of the staked line, sitting on a flat boulder with his tail wrapped around his paws. He had marked three discrepancies in the morning survey without announcing them, placing small pebbles at each irregularity and letting us find them ourselves. I had found two. The third I found by following his gaze.
The ledger-house stood finished at the center. It had gone up first, before sleeping quarters, before any cooking-fire enclosure. Its doorway held a light.
I reached into my pocket and found the grey pellet-stone, cool and faintly ridged. I had been carrying it since the Owl's perch. I held it without taking it out fully, just a thumb pressed to its surface while I surveyed the last interval and wrote the number down.
At the planting bed nearest the east wall, the Weaverdown seed had broken ground. The shoot was one finger tall, pale green, leaning slightly toward the ledger-house door. No one made a ceremony of it. The Builder glanced at it once and went back to her mortar. I wrote it down: the date, the height, the direction of the lean.
That was the rule we had arrived at without discussion. Whatever happens, written the same hour it is lived.
The light in the ledger-house doorway holds steady while Rurik counts the third discrepancy-stone into his palm.
