Dream d2021-s: What Marrowfold Left in the Hands

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the road ran flat between two darknesses, and we walked it in the hour when the first lamps come on behind you and the ones ahead have not yet appeared.

Marrowfold was a smear of amber at our backs. The Weather Reader walked with her barometric case slung over one shoulder, tapping the glass face with one knuckle at intervals - checking, not reading, the way you press a bruise to know whether it still hurts.

"The pressure dropped a quarter-point while we were there," she said. "Held steady the last three days. That's what mending does, sometimes. Not a fix - a held note."

I wrote that down without stopping my feet. The book of readings had grown heavy at Marrowfold. Not from length - from density. Some places you read in a day; Marrowfold had handed us layer after layer the way old plaster reveals paint colors you didn't know were under it.

The Builder was quiet a long time after that. Then: "The hinge on the granary door. Whoever set it originally knew what they were doing. Knew the wood would swell in August. Built the clearance right in." She said it the way you remember a stranger's good handshake. "I want to remember that."

Lano trotted ahead on the verge, nose down, cataloguing whatever the grass held. At the fork where a smaller track split off toward some unmarked dark, she paused, looked back at us, then continued on the main road without being asked. She knew.

Rurik was already at the fork, sitting exactly at the point where the two paths diverged. He had been behind us a moment ago. He watched the smaller track with his amber eyes until we had all passed, then fell in behind us - his way of closing a door.

"Quillmoss," I said. Not a question. More like reading a word aloud to feel its weight before you carry it.

"Overgrown approaches," the Weather Reader said. "The road in will tell us something before we arrive. Grass grows in where weight stops traveling."

"Weight stopped traveling there for a reason," said the Builder, but she said it carefully, the way you name a thing you don't yet understand.

We made camp on the verge where a stand of birch gave us a windbreak. Lano circled twice and settled against my leg, her tail still for once. Rurik sat at the camp's edge facing the direction we had not yet gone, ears tilted forward, reading whatever the dark at Quillmoss was already sending ahead of itself.

I kept the book open on my knee but wrote nothing further. Some readings begin before you arrive.
