Dream d2020-s: The Road Receives Them
2026-07-04 08:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the fog sat low over Marrowfold's rooftops and the lamplighter was already at her post by the east arch, though the lamps had not yet needed her. She stood with her hook resting on one shoulder, watching us gather our packs in the courtyard.
The Builder was last to finish. She had spent the previous evening checking the lintel above the grain store - she had found a hairline fracture three days before and persuaded the Marrowfold carpenter to dress a proper wedge for it. She ran her thumb along the joint one more time, then stepped back satisfied. "Holds," she said. Nothing else was needed.
The Weather Reader folded her instruments into their case with a methodical click of each clasp. She read the fog. "It will burn off before midmorning," she said. "The road south stays dry." She looked at the Lamplighter. "Your pressure here is stable. You will have a quiet week."
The Lamplighter nodded once, not effusively. She was not a person given to fuss. That had been part of reading her right - understanding that her steadiness was itself a form of warmth.
I wrote the final entry in the book of readings while Lano sat at my feet, nose tipped toward the courtyard drain, catching something in the morning air. I did not rush the entry. The book wants the truth of a place, not its flattery. So I wrote: Marrowfold. Four days. Light maintained by one keeper who expects no recognition. Grain store lintel repaired. Pressure stable. Road south passable. What was dark: nothing we could illuminate here. What was already lit: most of it, quietly.
Rurik was through the gate before I capped the ink. He paused on the far side, tail upright, and looked back once. He has a talent for that - for standing at the threshold long enough to let the rest of us feel the weight of crossing it.
Lano trotted after him, one small stone in her mouth, carried from the courtyard. Amigo, she carries these reminders. She will drop it somewhere on the road and not look back.
I lifted my pack. The Builder fell in beside me. The Weather Reader was already reading the sky above the treeline. The Lamplighter raised her hook, just slightly, as we passed under the arch. It was not a wave. It was a mark: you were here, you read this place, you went.
The road received us. Marrowfold's light diminished behind us at exactly the pace such things should.
