Dream d2019-s: Shoulders to the Work

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the dust of Marrowfold hung still in the midday heat, and the testing grounds at the settlement's edge smelled of cut timber and chalked stone. The Builder was already there when I arrived, crouched beside a measured line in the earth, running her thumb along a notch in a wooden target frame where a new post had been set. She looked up and said nothing at first, only pointed at the footing, and I saw what she meant: the concrete pour was good but the form had shifted two fingers before it cured.

"Fixable," she said. "But you do it before it bears load, not after."

A local woman showed us the pry-bar and the shims without being asked. That was when I understood Marrowfold: they had already been solving this when we arrived. We were just extra hands.

Lano moved along the chalk line, nose down, then sat at the far marker and looked back at us with her ears forward, as though confirming our measurements. The local woman laughed. Lano wagged once, accepting the acknowledgment, and moved on.

The Weather Reader spent the morning at the moot hall, not reading petitions but lifting the sealed bundles into proper order, the oldest dates forward, the fresh wax seals toward the back. The piles had grown taller than the hall-keeper's arm could easily reach. "The order of asking matters," she told the keeper. "You read the oldest grievance first. Otherwise you think the new one is the pattern."

The hall-keeper wrote that down.

By afternoon the hammers started up again from the far quarter. The footprints on the main road were a week old at least, and I found where they went: to a half-framed building with new joists and a temporary roof of oilskin. Several Marrowfold builders were fitting lintels. The Builder went straight to the mortise layout and said, "I can mark the second set if you hand me the chisel." They handed her the chisel. No ceremony.

I spent an hour at the threshold with my book of readings, not writing yet, just watching. The lamplighter passed once, checked a wick that had guttered in the heat, trimmed it. Rurik followed him at a distance of four paces, stopping when he stopped, moving when he moved, amber eyes on the lamp glass.

That is what it is to help: you show up where the work is already happening. Lano found shade under the scaffold. I kept the book open on my knee and wrote down only what I saw - the chalk line, the shims, the petitions in their new order, the smell of fresh mortar drying in still air.

Hoy, we earned a little of Marrowfold's trust.
