Dream d2022-s: Quillmoss in Thin Rain
2026-07-04 10:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the road bent around a low rise and Quillmoss appeared below us in the drizzle, its perimeter wall still mostly standing, its lamps dark.
We had been walking since midday. The Weather Reader had her barometer out for the last hour, tapping it occasionally, reading the needle's small hesitations. "Pressure's been dropping since the third milestone," she said, not alarmed, just noting. "This drizzle is settled in. It means to stay."
Lano walked at my left heel, her white coat gone grey with the wet. Her ears stayed up, reading the approach the way she always does - swiveling forward, then sideways, then forward again. Whatever she heard in Quillmoss, it did not alarm her. Her tail moved once, a single slow wag, and she shook the rain from her ears and kept walking.
The gate was intact. That was the first entry in the book: gate intact, hinges present, latch workable. The Builder ran her fingers along the lintel stone as we passed under it, pressing her thumb into the mortar joint. "Not crumbling," she said quietly. "Just old. Someone laid this to last and it obliged them."
Inside the wall the silence had texture. Not the silence of abandonment - there was no smell of rot, no toppled walls, no grass splitting the paving in every seam. It was quieter than that. The silence of a place that had simply run out of people and was waiting, without urgency, to see what came next.
A cart stood near what had been a storage shed, its yoke resting on the ground, a coil of rope left on the seat. Whoever had parked it last had not expected to leave it long. I wrote that down too.
Rurik found us a room in the only building with a dry ceiling - a low annex off the main hall, its hearth cold but intact. He sat in the doorway while I lit a candle and marked the threshold in his way: one long look in each direction, then a slow blink. He did this with the gravity he brings to every threshold, which is to say completely, without irony.
Lano circled twice and settled on a dry corner of stone floor. Sosegada, I thought - the word fitted her exactly, that quality of being at ease without being asleep.
"We read the place properly tomorrow," the Weather Reader said, hanging her coat near the cold hearth.
"Yes," the Builder agreed. "Tonight we just let it tell us what it wants to."
I opened the book to a fresh page and wrote the date, the gate, the rope on the cart seat, the silence that was not decay. First impressions. The reading would begin in the morning.
