Dream d1980-s: The Stone She Left Behind
2026-07-01 10:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the morning fog had not lifted by the time we made ready to go. Ospreymoss looked smaller in that grey light - the broken arcade, the two standing walls with their soft skirts of moss, the courtyard where we had slept with the stones pressing through the grass beneath us.
The Caretaker was already at the arch when I came to write the last entry. She had been there since before I woke; she was the kind of person who sees guests out the same way she sees them in, with the same unhurried attention. I asked her if there was anything she wanted recorded.
"Write that the west wall holds," she said. "The rest you've already written."
The Builder had found the lean in the west wall our first evening. She had spent the better part of yesterday shimming a single stone at the base - a quiet intervention, the kind that would be invisible for decades unless someone knew to look. She stood at my shoulder now and said nothing, but I saw her eyes go to the wall and stay there.
I wrote: West wall holds. Stone shimmed at base, third course from the ground. The work was done without being asked.
The Weather Reader folded her instruments away and came to stand beside the Caretaker. "The pressure is dropping from the east," she said, "but not fast. You'll have clear hours."
"Then take them," said the Caretaker.
Rurik moved to the arch first, as he always does - placed one paw across the threshold and looked back at us, eyes steady in the fog. I closed the book and tucked it under my arm. Lano pressed close to my heel; she had been carrying a chip of pale stone in her mouth since before dawn, and she set it down at the arch before stepping through, pequeña and deliberate, as though she had decided something about the place and wished to mark the decision.
We filed through. The Caretaker raised one hand and held it there until we had rounded the first bend in the track. I did not look back after that - the reading was complete, the entry made, the wall would hold without us watching it - but I heard, or thought I heard, the fog thicken behind us, pulling the ruin back into its own quiet.
The road opened ahead. Rurik padded into it without hesitation, and the rest of us followed him into the grey.
