Dream d1981-s: Rurik at the Fork

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the road from Ospreymoss ran straight for an hour then bent west where a tributary crossed under flat stones. At blue dusk we stopped where the verge was wide enough to spread a canvas and where a stand of willows broke the wind off the water.

The Builder made the fire. She is quick at this, efficient in a way that has nothing to do with speed - three stones placed once and exactly, tinder from her pack's outer pocket, no wasted motion. The Weather Reader read the barometer twice, compared readings, and wrote a single number in her log without comment.

"Pressure's rising," she said, tilting the log toward the firelight. "Whatever sat over that place has lifted."

The place was Ospreymoss. We did not need to name it.

Lano circled the fire twice, chose a spot just beyond the light's warmth, and curled there with her nose toward the dark. Her ears stayed up.

I opened the book of readings to the Ospreymoss entry and read back what I had written over the past three nights: the collapsed walkway, the intact granary, the wall with the old gauge still mounted at chest height, its needle rusted to a reading that meant nothing now. What we found there. What we could not fix. One bridge is back. The gauge will never move again.

"There was a kindness to the place," the Builder said. She did not elaborate, and I did not ask her to. What she meant was the way the joinery held in things that should have failed long ago. Someone had over-built in the right places. That is its own kind of message across time.

"Someone who loved the work," I said.

"Yes."

We ate. The fire settled. The road in both directions was dark - Ospreymoss to the east invisible, Harrowlea to the west not yet a glow on the sky. Rurik had gone to the fork where a smaller track split off north, and he sat there now at the edge of the firelight's reach, facing the northern dark. Not alarmed. Reading.

The Weather Reader looked at him. "He does not like the north branch."

"He has opinions about all branches," the Builder said.

Lano's tail moved once, as if agreeing with both of them.

I wrote the date and our position in the book. Open road. Verge camp. Fork unmarked on the reference map. Then I wrote: what is left of a place is not always its ruins. Sometimes it is what the builder chose to make stronger than it needed to be.

Rurik did not return to the fire. He sat at the fork all night, watching what the north track held. When I woke at the dark's lowest hour he was still there, a shape at the edge of things, amber eyes catching nothing I could see.
