Dream d1979-s: Dust on the Still Hour
2026-07-01 09:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the road to Ospreymoss was pale and straight for the last two miles, and the heat had not broken even at the hour we arrived. Dust hung behind us like a curtain being slowly drawn shut.
The ruin announced itself at distance with silence first - no bell, no work-sound, no dogs. Then the shape of it: halls laid in clean symmetry, rooflines that had not yet slumped, a settlement that from this angle read as purposeful, as though its builders had known exactly what each structure was for and had placed it there without argument. The Weather Reader paused on the road beside me, instrument case held loose at her side. "Pressure is steady," she said. "Not the kind of still that comes before something. The kind that's been sitting here a while."
Rurik moved ahead without being asked. He always does when the road meets a threshold - pads into the approach at his own speed, tail low, reading left and right. He reached the gate before any of us and sat down in its shadow to wait.
Lano pressed close to my left knee as we crossed the last stretch. Her nose worked at the air; her ears were up but not alarmed. "Quieta," I said, more habit than instruction - she was already reading the place on her own, steady and unhurried.
"It's organized," the Builder said, squinting at the nearest hall. She walked half a step off the road to scan the foundation line. "Whoever laid this out knew their load-paths. That corner-joint is still clean from here." She sounded almost reluctant to say it - the way she always does when something has been done right by hands not her own.
We found a room in what had been a waystation, its wooden shutters warped but intact, the floorboards inside still holding level. I set the book of readings on the low ledge by the window and left it closed. There was nothing to write yet - only first impressions, and I have learned not to write impressions before the place has had a chance to be more than light and silence.
Rurik marked the doorway once, brushing his cheek along the frame. Then he settled in the center of the room and tucked his feet beneath him.
"Tomorrow," the Weather Reader said from the corner, working her instruments back into their case. "We read it properly tomorrow."
I sat with Lano curled warm across my boots and listened to Ospreymoss hold its quiet. Through the window, the hall-rooflines stood clean against the dark. Something here had been built to last. Whether it had - that was tomorrow's reading.
