Dream d1978-s: West Wind, Open Ledger

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the road ran long between two kinds of dark, and Ironfield was already small enough behind us that I could cover its lamps with my thumb held up against the sky.

We had been there long enough to know which doors opened early and which stayed shut past noon. The Weather Reader walked beside me with her barometer case slung across one shoulder, and she said Ironfield had carried a low pressure for years, the kind that settles into timber and makes joints ache. She said she had felt it lift a little by the end. Not much. Enough.

The Builder was ahead, walking the verge with her eyes on the road surface rather than the horizon. She does that between places, reads the road itself, the slope and drainage and the stones set by whoever came before. She said without turning: "They laid this section well. Good camber. Whoever did it understood water."

Rurik paced at the fork we passed an hour before sundown, sitting in the middle of the junction until we caught up, then rising and taking the left branch without waiting to be asked. He always knows which road is the one we mean to take. I stopped asking how.

Lano trotted at my heel with a small pale stone in her mouth, something she had picked up in the lane outside the granary at Ironfield. She has done this before - carries a piece of a place for a while and then sets it down somewhere new without ceremony. I watched her nose catch something on the wind and her ears go flat, curious rather than alarmed.

We made camp on the verge where a stand of thorn trees gave us a windbreak. The west wind had been at us all afternoon, and the Weather Reader read it as the front edge of a longer change. She said Ospreymoss, when we reached it, might be wet.

I wrote the Ironfield notes by firelight. The lamp adjusted in the granary loft. The petition left in the wall beside the south gate. The family name carved into a beam that no one remaining there could parse. Pages of small particular things. That is what a reading is - the accumulation of what a place refuses to stop saying.

Rurik settled at the road-facing edge of the camp and watched the dark where Ospreymoss lay still invisible ahead. His amber eyes moved once, twice, then went still.

I closed the book and listened to the wind work through the thorns. The road was quiet in both directions. We were between places, which is its own kind of position - not arrived, not departed, moving toward a ruin with wet weather coming and the last place's lamplight already gone below the curve of the road.
