Dream d1945-s: Leave to Stay

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we came back through the Conduit Yard a second time, and the difference was that now we knew it.

The first crossing had been reconnaissance - eyes scanning the gauge clusters, noses reading the smoke-temperature, the Wireman running one knuckle along a dead conduit to feel for residual heat. This crossing was something else. The Weather Reader called the air as we walked in: dry, pressed, carrying soot from the eastern stacks but nothing caustic, forge-wind cycling in a slow pull from the floor vents. Good enough to breathe. Workable.

The bench was still there, bolted into the flank of the engine housing where we had found it - a pale slab of iron with a worn groove along its edge where ten thousand elbows had rested over the years. Rurik walked straight to it and sat without ceremony, tail wrapped around his feet, yellow eyes making one slow circuit of the space. He was marking a line on the floor that only he could see.

The Scavenger moved into the conduit alcoves along the left wall, tapping each housing, already cataloguing. The Listener stood in the center of the room with his eyes half-closed, and after a moment he said something was still running - far back, a pump or a timer, something on a slow heartbeat. The Builder walked the far wall with her palm flat against the stone, the way she read structures, feeling for what they had left to give.

Lano padded beside me, ears moving, and I watched her nose trace the air in small precise arcs. She stopped at the base of the forge-engine and sat, looking up at me.

The Wireman found the second switch panel we had missed on the first crossing, set back inside a recessed housing. He did not throw any switch. He just noted it, turned, caught the Builder's eye, and she came to look.

I set my pack against the bench. Lano circled once and lay down near my feet.

We did not make speeches about it. There was no declaration. The Foundry simply became the place we were staying - by the setting of packs, by Rurik's chosen line, by the way the Builder and the Wireman were already standing together deciding what the switch panel meant. Oxy drifted to the cool channel beside the bench and rested there, their feathered gills fanning slowly.

The Weather Reader wrote something small in the book. Not a forecast. An arrival.
