Dream d1946-s: The Bench Drifts True

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we were back in the Conduit Yard, second pass, and the forge was running full throat.

The bench had moved. Not far - a finger's width at the near corner, maybe two at the far - but the Builder caught it before any of us said a word. She crouched at the base fitting, ran her thumb along the joint, and made a sound like a person who has found exactly what they expected and takes no pleasure in being right.

"Under load," she said. "Not when it's cold. The whole mount walks when the pressure climbs."

The Weather Reader already had her hand on the pipe run above us, the big iron loop that feeds the central forge. She was reading the vibration through her palm the way another person might read print. "It climbs at the third bell," she said. "Always. There's a draw from the far duct that nobody mapped. I felt it on the first pass but the bench was cold then."

The Scavenger had drifted to the discard pile at the east wall without anyone directing him. He moved through it the way Rurik moved through a room - unhurried, certain, turning pieces over with a practiced boot-toe. Rurik himself sat on a low coping above the channel, tail curled, watching the Scavenger work with the patience of a scholar reviewing a text he has read before.

Oxy was at the gauge. They were always at the gauge. They made no announcement, just stood in the cool runnel beside the bench and watched the needle with the calm attention of someone whose entire purpose is to notice exactly this kind of thing.

Lano trotted the perimeter of the yard in a tight loop. Her nose was low and her ears were forward and she kept returning to a spot near the mount base, circling it, pressing her nose to the ground there.

"She smells the old grease," the Wireman said. "Something was dragged across that floor recently. Something heavy."

The Builder stood up. She pulled the bench a fraction with both hands, testing for play. There was play. She marked the corner with chalk, then the mount joint, then the floor below it. Three marks, a triangle of known drift.

"We can shim it," she said. "But shimming a moving thing is just starting a longer argument."

The Weather Reader laughed - a short, honest sound. "All repair is."

I wrote it down in the book of readings: the bench drifts under full forge load, drifts true to the third-bell draw, drifts toward the unmapped duct. Lano circled the base and would not stop circling.

The forge breathed. The needle climbed. We had found the shape of the problem.
