What the Waste Gives First

Dream d1944-s: The Gauge Leans Another Way
2026-06-28 17:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where we came back around to the Conduit Yard on the second pass, and it looked different the way a room looks different when you have slept in it once. The forge-light fell at a new angle, or we fell at a new angle to it - the Weather Reader said something about the pressure front having shifted, how the heat-haze off the smelting bays had bent the whole afternoon, and she was reading it the way she reads cloud-mass: with her chin up and her eyes half-closed and her hands loose at her sides.
Rurik picked the path through the dead conduit-runs, his black shape slipping between segments of burst pipe without touching either wall. He had been here before too. There is something in the way a cat navigates return territory - less like memory and more like the body knowing.
The gauges along the main header-run were cracked, most of them, but two held their needles. One said too much and one said too little, and the Wireman crouched at the junction box between them and explained to the Builder what that contradiction meant in terms of flow. She listened with her arms folded, nodding at the points where she already knew and asking at the points where she did not.
Oxy lay in the cool gauge-channel, the water there carrying off some residual heat from the foundry block above. They were still. When you are still in a place that has shifted, you become a kind of fixed point, a reference, and we found ourselves glancing back to them the way you glance at a chalk mark on a wall to confirm you have not moved.
Lano found something in the slag-heap beside the bright bench - she circled it twice, then sat down and looked at us over her shoulder. Not alarm. The look that says: here, come see this.
The Scavenger came forward and crouched where she indicated. He turned the thing over in his hands and passed it to me without comment. It was a page from a reading-book, pressed flat by weight and heat until it had taken on the texture of metal foil. The numbers were still legible. The date on it meant we had been here before, in a sense neither of us had been, which is the kind of arithmetic the Foundry District keeps.
The Listener stood at the far end of the header-run, one hand flat against a pipe that still trembled. "Running," he said. Not loud. Just a note.
There was work here that wanted reading, and we had come back with better eyes for it.

Note
The world outside the walled town slowly exhaled, a chemical sweetness coating the air as we approached the waste. The edges of the district caught everything, denser than the heart.
