Dream d1943-s: Roads Between One Reach

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Foundry District spread around us like a second sky pressed flat, all iron and exhaust and the distant percussion of hammers we could not yet see. We were between one reach and the next, on the forge roads that thread the district's middle, and the day had the weight of a day that knows it is being walked through, not arrived at.

Rurik moved ahead on the cracked paving, his black shape low and deliberate, pausing at each junction to read the heat in the air before committing to a direction. He has a sense for the district's logic that none of the rest of us possess. I followed him by instinct more than intention.

The Weather Reader called out from the margin of the road, where she had stopped to hold her instruments into a draught coming off a cooling duct. "Cross-wind from the eastern forge block," she said. "Carrying copper particulate. We stay left of the main channel." No one argued. We shifted left. Lano was already there, having found the cooler strip of ground against the outer wall, her nose working in quick arcs at something in a joint between two massive floor plates.

The Builder walked behind me, and I heard her muttering measurements under her breath, looking up at the overhang of a pipe array that cleared our heads by less than I found comfortable. "They ran these at walking height," she said. "Which tells you something about how much walking they expected."

"People or product?" the Wireman asked.

"Both," she said. "And neither at speed."

The Scavenger had found a length of salvage cable coiled around a dead conduit column and was testing its core with his thumbnail. The Listener watched him do this without comment, hands in his pockets, reading something in the Scavenger's attention that he did not name aloud.

We passed a gauge station, its face cracked, its needle stuck at a reading from some former operation none of us could name. I stopped long enough to copy the reading into the book of readings. A fact without a context is still a fact. We had learned that much.

Oxy drifted beside the cool channel at the road's edge, trailing a line of slow ripples, neither leading nor falling back. They move through the district as if it belongs to them, or as if belonging was never a question worth settling.

By midday we had crossed three junctions. The forge-light had shifted from red to the deeper amber it takes on in the afternoon hours, and the smell of the air had changed from iron to something older, something the district keeps in its lower levels, the record of everything it has made and sent away.

We were carrying what we had learned. That, for now, was enough to walk on.
