Held True at the Gauge Walk

Dream d1942-s: Ten Passes, Ten True
2026-06-28 14:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Gauge Walk was quieter on the second crossing, the way a place is when you already know its temper. The forge-light had not changed - still that low red burn that turns every shadow into something angular - but we moved differently through it. More deliberate. The first time through a room you are reading it; the second time you are living in it.
The Toolwright stood at the bench we had re-seated the day before, or what felt like the day before in the way dreams compress distance into adjacency. He was running the gauge again. Not because he doubted it but because he was the kind of person who trusts a thing only after it has been asked to hold under weight, repeatedly, without flinching. Rurik had marked a testing line on the floor with a piece of spent chalk - a neat, precise line that only a cat would think to draw - and each time the gauge returned to true he made a small mark beside it. Ten marks, ten returns.
The Builder watched this with her arms folded and what I recognized as her approval expression, which she gives to almost nothing. "That is how you know," she said. Not to anyone in particular. Just out into the iron air.
The Scavenger had found a section of conduit that had been leaking slow heat for what looked like years, the metal around it gone granular and friable, and he was cleaning it with methodical patience. The Wireman handed him tools without being asked, which told me they had been working together long enough to share a rhythm.
The Weather Reader had gone still near the far end of the Walk, reading whatever information the air in this place carried. She reported it without drama: pressure stable, the forge-vents cycling correctly, the morning's heat already leaning in from the east-facing duct. Data, clean and usable.
Lano sat at the edge of the chalk line and did not cross it. Her ears were up, her nose working. She watched Rurik's count the way she watched anything she had decided mattered.
Oxy drifted at the edge of the cool channel, neither helping nor departing, present in that way they always were - recording something, maybe, or simply accompanying.
The Listener had found a corner of the bench where the old bolt-marks were still legible. He was reading them quietly, touching the ridges with two fingers. History compressed into metal.
Ten passes. Ten true. The lesson of the morning was not dramatic. It was a tool you could rely on and people who did not stop until they were certain.
