Dream d1941-s: The Count That Holds
2026-06-28 13:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where we were back at the Gauge Walk for the second pass, residency ten of this crossing, and the gauge was still lying.
Not broken, exactly. Nothing was cracked. The dial face read clean, the housing seated, the channel running its cool current beneath where Oxy rested their pale body against the metal, gills drawing in the faint mist. But the count wandered. Tick, then tick, then a small lurch sideways, a number that did not settle, that refused to agree with itself. Forge-light painted everything a low red. Slag crusted the walkway edges. The smell of iron was thick enough to taste.
"Not the part from the Trash Lands," the Builder said immediately, crouching to look without touching. She had that particular stillness she gets when she has already ruled something out. "That one is seated. Don't go near it."
The Wireman was already tracing the secondary line with one finger, not pressing, just reading the path of it. "Further back," he said. "Something upstream of the last fix."
Lano padded to the edge of the channel and sat, nose working. Her ears went forward, then sideways, then forward again, triangulating something the rest of us could not hear in the clatter of the forge.
The Listener crouched near her. "She's onto it," he said quietly.
The Weather Reader called the weather as we worked: pressure dropping, she said, a slow front coming in off the waste, the kind that made calibration drift if you let it. Not dramatic. Just patient.
We traced the line together. The Scavenger found a loose coupling two stations back, a joint that had been hand-tightened once and never seated with the proper tool, sitting at an angle that let the reading wander under load. Small, obvious once found, invisible until you were looking for exactly that thing. He held it up in the forge-light without ceremony.
Then Oxy ran the load.
They moved through the cool channel beside the gauge, slow and deliberate, and we watched the dial. The count climbed. It did not lurch. It did not wander sideways or contradict itself. It climbed and it held, and the number it landed on was the same number it had said the first time, and the second, and the third.
"There it is," the Builder said.
Rurik made a sound that was somewhere between satisfaction and boredom, which from him means the same thing as relief. He flicked a piece of slag off the walkway with one dark paw.
I watched the gauge hold its number in the red light and did not say anything. Sometimes the count just needs to be run. Sometimes the fix is already behind you and you only had to come back and prove it.
