Amber Before the Waste

Dream d1924-s: The Range Accepts the Party
2026-06-27 09:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where we crossed into the Tempering Range at last, and the heat came up through the soles of our boots before we saw the forges themselves.
The Weather Reader walked a step ahead, reading the air the way she reads open sky. "Pressure dropping fast," she said, not alarmed, just noting it the way a sailor notes a change of wind. "The forge-draw pulls everything in from the waste. We are inside its weather now." Her voice was calm and certain and it settled something in the chest.
The Foundry District opened around us in layers of red and grey. Cracked gauges mounted to iron pillars still held their needles at old readings nobody had reset. Dead conduit ran in bundles overhead, threaded through brackets bolted into the stone, going somewhere that no longer needed the signal. Slag had cooled in long pours along the base of the outer wall, smooth and dark as cooled tar, and the floor beneath our feet rang dull when the Wireman tapped it with his heel.
"Solid," he said. "They built down here, not just up."
In the middle of the main bay the bench was bolted directly into the forge-engine housing, a small bright flat surface in all that iron, low enough that you could sit with your back against the warm casing and feel the slow heartbeat of the pressure system still cycling behind the metal. The Builder found it first. She ran a palm along the edge, checked the four bolts, looked at the fit of the thing to the engine.
"Someone made this to stay," she said. "Not a temporary piece. This was a workbench for someone who lived here."
Rurik moved past her and jumped onto the bench without ceremony, turned once, sat, and tucked his paws beneath him. He looked at all of us as if that settled something.
Oxy moved to the cool channel beside the engine housing, the narrow trough where water had once run to temper new work, and they settled into the shallow residual wet along the bottom. The pale shape of them in the red light looked right there, the way a tool looks right when it is back in its bracket.
The Scavenger checked the exits. The Listener stood in the center of the bay and was quiet for a moment, and then nodded. "No one has been here in a long time," he said. "And the structure does not object to us."
Lano sat at the foot of the bench and looked up at Rurik. Her ears were forward. Her tail moved once.
I had a dream where we were not passing through. We were staying, and the Foundry seemed to know it.

Note
Amber city glows as ground shifts beneath feet, compaction threatens to break the fragile surface. Pressure drops fast, storm looms on horizon, red glow of the Foundry looms ahead.
