Dream d1925-s: The Range Reads Dirty

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Tempering Range filled the hall with a low, irregular throb, like a heart that had learned the wrong rhythm and kept it anyway. The forge-engine behind us pushed heat in waves, and the bench bolted to its flank was warm even through my gloves. Red light came from the gaps between iron plates. Grey light came from the vents above. Everything in between was the color of old work.

The Builder moved first, the way she always does when there is structure to be read. She crouched at the first joint, ran two fingers along the seam, pressed. She did not say anything yet. That is how you know she found something worth understanding.

The Weather Reader stood at the central column with her palms open, feeling the pressure the instruments could only approximate. She had a notebook. She had been filling it since the waste began. She said, without turning, that the routing was wrong. Not broken. Wrong. Someone had made a choice here that was not about the work.

The Wireman leaned over her shoulder to look at the gauge mounted near the extraction duct. He whistled, low. "She reads forty above rated," he said. "And jumps."

"Jumps how?" the Scavenger asked. He had already moved to the discard-pile along the far wall, the heap of rejected castings and pulled conduit that accumulates at every bench where serious work happens. He sorted with quick, economical hands. He was looking for the pattern in what had been thrown away.

"Jumps like it can not hold the load," the Wireman said. "Then recovers. Then jumps again."

Rurik sat on the cool iron of the unused channel beside the bench, tail moving slowly, watching the gauge as if it owed him an explanation. Beside him, Oxy settled into the same channel, their attention fixed on the needle, on the numbers it refused to settle between. They did not speak. They did not need to. Oxy's purpose was the reading itself: to sit with the measurement until the measurement told the truth.

Lano padded the length of the bench, nose low, and stopped at the place where the routing plates met. Her ears came up. She sat down there and did not move.

"She smells the junction," the Listener said quietly. He had been standing near the door. He hears the things that precede the event.

The Builder straightened and crossed to where Lano sat. She looked at the joint. She looked at the gauge. She said: "It is not the load. The load is fine. It is the path the load is taking."

The Scavenger held up a casting from the pile. Scorched at one edge. Clean at the other. "Same problem," he said. "Twice."

We stood in the red light together, and the range went on reading dirty, and we began to understand.
