Dream d1923-s: What the Range Wants Reading
2026-06-27 08:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the party turned from the forge-bench and moved deeper into the Foundry District, toward the Tempering Range, and the light changed as we walked. Behind us, the main forge-fire ran orange and steady; ahead, it shifted into something redder, angrier, a color that pressed against the skin like a held breath.
The Wireman went first. He moved along the wall, trailing one hand across a rack of pipes that ran parallel to the floor, tapping each joint with a knuckle, listening for the hollow note that meant a failing seam. He found one three meters in and marked it with a scratch of chalk he kept in his breast pocket. "Not today," he said to it, the way you speak to something you plan to come back for.
The Weather Reader called out the atmosphere as we crossed the threshold. "Pressure's climbing," she said, reading the gauges bolted to the stanchion posts, four of them in a row, their needles shivering at different heights. "That one's wrong." She pointed to the third. "The others agree with each other but that one's telling its own story." She wrote it in the book of readings, two quick lines.
Lano padded ahead, nose close to the seam where the floor met the wall, tracking something we couldn't smell. Her ears were up, her tail low and still - reading the place, not alarmed, just attending to it. She stopped at a trough of cool water running along the base of a tempering tank and looked back at us, ears pivoting.
Oxy surfaced beside her. They had been following the cool channels all the way from the forge-bench, finding the water-paths that threaded through the heat like a separate grammar written inside the building. They settled near the trough's edge and extended one external gill, slow and deliberate, verifying the temperature. Whatever they found satisfied them. They stayed.
The Builder crouched beside a bracket near the first tank and ran her thumb along a stress fracture in the iron. "This took weight it wasn't meant for," she said. "Recent. The crack's still bright." She looked up at the Scavenger, who was already circling the tank with his quick eyes on the bracing. He named three candidate causes in the order he'd check them. She nodded twice and pulled a measuring cord from her pack.
The Dreamer, meaning me, stood at the center of the Range and read the whole arrangement, the gauges that agreed and the one that didn't, the fracture still bright, the cool trough, the forge-light leaning into red. There was work here that wanted reading. We were already doing it, each one of us according to the gift we carried.
The range waited, patient and hot. We set about learning it.
