Dream d1920-s: The Bench Holds Its Weight

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we were still in the Foundry District, still under the red pressure of the forge-light, when the Wireman noticed the sag.

It was the Builder who had seated the first part of the bench - done clean, done right, and none of us would touch that side. The problem was the joint where the new section met the old, the seam running along the floor of the Slag Gate like a fault line waiting to open. One side carrying too much. The other side carrying too little. The whole thing listing toward the channel where Oxy rested in the cool water, their gills moving slow and steady as a metronome.

"It will hold a night," the Listener said. "It will not hold a week."

The Scavenger crouched and ran his fingers along the lower rail. He said nothing, but his silence had a shape to it. He had seen this kind of failure before, in places where the load was never counted properly.

We worked without removing anything the Builder had already set. That was the rule of it. The Wireman passed a shim to the Weather Reader, who fitted it from above while the Scavenger held the angle steady from below. I held the lamp because the forge-light threw the wrong shadows in that corner. Rurik sat near the wall, watching the door, ears up, making sure nothing came in while our hands were busy.

Lano padded the perimeter twice, nose down, and then sat at the edge of the channel, ears cocked toward Oxy as if she understood something the rest of us were still calculating.

"Now," the Wireman said, and the Builder called the load.

Oxy lifted out of the channel and moved to the gauge. They pressed one broad forefoot to the plate and we watched the needle trace upward, waver, settle.

"Steady," Oxy said. "Both sides even."

The count held.

The Weather Reader let out a breath that was almost a laugh. Outside the Slag Gate, she had read the wind coming in from the waste, a dry lateral pressure with a faint smell of cooling metal. She said it would hold through the night. She said the pressure from the north would not arrive until morning.

We did not celebrate. Competent people rarely celebrate what they simply expected to be true. But there was warmth in the way the Scavenger finally sat back on his heels, and in the way Rurik's tail moved once across the floor, and in the way Lano made a small sound, content, before curling herself near the bench that now bore its weight the way a bench should: evenly, without complaint.

We checked the book of readings. The count was entered. The bench was settled. The crossing held.
