The Wandering Count

Dream d1919-s: The Dirty Reading
2026-06-26 22:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Slag Gate was the problem and none of us knew it until the gauge on the bench began to wander.
The Foundry District pressed in from every side - iron beams sweating with heat, pressure lines humming their low complaint, forge-light throwing everything red and grey in alternating pulses. We had made camp at the small bright bench bolted into the flank of the engine, the one the Wireman had found on the first pass through. Oxy rested in the cool channel beside it, their pale gills fanning slowly, watching us with that calm that neither hurries nor condemns. Rurik had taken the high shelf above the intake manifold, his black shape a still point in all the shifting light.
It was the Wireman who noticed first.
"The count is wandering," he said, not alarmed, just flat and specific. He held his readout toward the bench lamp. "Every third measure it drifts. Low, then high, then low again. Forty-count variance on a line that should sit steady."
The Weather Reader came to stand beside him. She had been tracking the pressure gradient since we crossed the outer slag plain, writing in her narrow book, and now she tipped the book toward the readout. "I saw a hitch in the air at the Gate," she said. "Something in how the current crossed the threshold. It felt like a joint that wasn't sitting flush."
The Builder went to the Gate itself, running her hands along the frame where the conduit entered the wall. She found the cracked housing almost immediately - a hairline split, invisible unless you were already looking for it, letting interference bleed into every reading that passed through. She called it out by feel rather than sight. "Here. Here is the lie in the line."
We worked it together. The Listener held the lamp at the angle the Builder needed. The Wireman stripped the split and the Scavenger, who had produced from some deep coat pocket a length of seal-tape that pre-dated anything else we carried, bound the housing clean. The Weather Reader called the readings aloud as they steadied. Lano sat at the edge of the bench and watched each of us in turn, her nose twitching at the sharp smell of the old tape, ears alert to the way the hum in the engine changed pitch as the interference cleared.
The gauge settled. The count held. Forty down to three, three to zero.
"There it is," the Wireman said. Not triumphant. Just: witnessed.
The forge-light still pulsed red and grey. The book of readings lay open on the bench, the Weather Reader already writing the corrected number in her small careful hand, and I felt the Foundry around us stop being a problem and start being the place where we worked.
