Phase 24: The Network of Readers
Dream d1921-s: Ten Passes at the Gate
2026-06-27 04:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Slag Gate stood with its patched bench bolted back into place, and the Toolwright was not done.
He had counted nine. He ran the tenth.
The red forge-light caught the rim of the bench as he pressed against it, testing the new seating, working methodically along the edge the way a person checks stitches in good leather: not to find a flaw but to confirm there is none. The smoke sat heavy across the upper vaults. Somewhere in the pressure-network a gauge ticked, steady and content.
I watched from the cooling channel, where Oxy had settled into the shallow water running beside the bench foundation, their pale shape just visible in the heat-shiver. They were watching too, I thought, in their quiet way. Not idle. Attending.
The Toolwright looked up from the tenth pass. He did not announce anything. He simply set the indicator to rest, stepped back, and stood with his hands at his sides.
"That will hold," the Builder said from her position at the conduit wall, where she had been monitoring the junction rather than the bench. She had seen enough to know.
"That has held," he said, and the difference mattered to him. Present perfect. Already done, already verified, already real.
Lano moved forward along the scoring line Rurik had marked on the floor earlier - he had drawn it in chalk dust with a careful paw, just inside the fail-margin, to give the bench something honest to be tested against. She sniffed the chalk, sneezed once, and trotted the full length of it without hurry. Her ears were up. Nothing alarmed her.
"Weather?" the Dreamer said, which was my voice, addressed to the Weather Reader.
She had been reading the pressure in the vents the whole time, the way she reads cloud formation: continuously, without needing to announce it. "Stable," she said. "The heat is behaving. The draft from the upper gate is three degrees cooler than when we arrived. Whatever was fighting the airflow is not fighting it anymore."
The Listener had written something in the book of readings. I could not see the words from where I stood, but his posture was the posture of someone writing a fact, not a guess.
The Scavenger set his shoulder against the cracked wall and looked at the bench with the respectful attention of someone who understands what repair costs. The Wireman was already tracing the adjacent conduit with two fingers, checking continuity.
We were not celebrating. We were consolidating. The work had passed under real weight and it had held, and now we knew it, and now we could carry it forward.
