Dream d1909-s: The Bellows Court, Reading

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the forge-light shifted and we all felt it before anyone said a word.

We had been standing at the near edge of the Foundry District, the bench behind us still warm from our last reading, the cool channel beside it holding Oxy in a long still float. Then the light changed - not dimmed, not brightened, but leaned, the way a lamp leans when someone shifts the counterweight on the other side of the wall. Rurik lifted his head and sat very straight. He had been marking a line on the floor with one claw, slow and deliberate, and he stopped mid-stroke.

"That," the Wireman said, "is the Bellows Court."

We moved toward it. The passage opened wide. Overhead, great iron pipes ran in parallel rows, dented, patched with riveted plates, one of them trailing a length of dead conduit that swayed in the thermal draft like seaweed. The forge-light here was red and low, source unseen, as though it rose from the stone itself. Cracked gauges lined the walls at intervals, their faces milky, their needles resting at positions that no longer meant what they once measured.

Lano went first, nose working. She moved in that particular way she has when a new space has given her too much information at once - quick short steps, pausing, ears forward, looping back to check something she almost missed. I followed her lead. The floor was grained with slag pressed flat by years of passage, and underfoot it had a texture like old bread.

The Weather Reader knelt at the center of the Court, where a circular drain had been set into the stone. She pressed two fingers to the grate. "The air runs deep here," she said. "Dry below, wet above. Something is still burning, somewhere under."

"The book of readings will want this," the Builder said. She had already opened it, turning to a new page, her finger tracing the column headings she had made three stops ago. She wrote without looking up. The scratch of her writing was the only small sound in the vast red room.

The Scavenger circled the outer wall, pulling at fittings, testing hinges on a row of iron lockers that stood sealed and silent. The Listener stood in the middle of the space with his eyes half-closed, not listening to us, listening past us, to whatever the pipes carried.

The Wireman pointed at a manifold rack near the far arch, where a dozen valves stood in sequence. "Those need reading," he said. "Not opening. Reading first."

I took out my own notes and found a clean page. The light leaned again, this time toward the manifold. The Court had something to say, and we had arrived in time to hear it.
