Dream d1910-s: Leave to Stay in Heat
2026-06-26 09:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Bellows Court received us like a held breath finally let go.
The Weather Reader had read the crossing before we made it. She stood at the edge of the waste with one hand lifted, not for silence but for calibration, her eyes scanning something no gauge could measure. "Dry rot in the upper thermals," she said. "The iron is pulling the moisture out. Whatever lives here has been cooking for a long time." Rurik circled her boots once, then sat with his tail wrapped clean around his paws, looking at the smoke that rose in columns between the stacks.
The Bellows Court opened to us through a corridor of dead conduit, pipes as thick as a man's torso running the length of the passage and terminating in nothing, sheared off or collapsed, their ends crusted with old oxide and scale. The forge-light arrived before the heat did - a red-grey wash that turned every face the color of cooling slag. Then the heat: not a wall but a field, something you walked into the way you walk into water, depth by depth.
The bench was the first thing I fixed on. Small, pale, bolted directly into the flank of the forge-engine by brackets too heavy for anything that size, as if someone had anticipated the bench might try to leave. The Wireman went to it immediately, running his fingers along the joint where bracket met iron. "Sound," he said. "Someone wanted this to stay."
Oxy moved to the cool channel that ran along the engine's base, where condensate had gathered in a shallow groove. They lay half in it, gills fanning slowly, watching the rest of us with that patient survey that meant nothing alarmed them.
Lano found the bench before any of us asked her to. She padded to it, sniffed the long surface, then sat beneath it with her ears up, watching the Wireman, watching the Scavenger, watching the far arch where more corridors led deeper in. Her tail moved once. Twice.
"We ask to stay," the Builder said, not to any of us but to the room itself, a formal acknowledgment of the kind that builders make when they recognize a structure worth inheriting. She placed her palm flat on the forge-engine's flank and held it there until the heat made her pull it back. "We know what this is. We know what it costs."
The Listener stood still at the center of the court and listened. After a long moment he said, "The building agrees."
So we stayed. The bench became ours. The cool channel was Oxy's. The red-grey light settled over all of it like a color we had always known.

Note
Past the last lamp, the village fades into shadow, and the air thickens with foreboding. The Builder's calm assessment contrasts sharply with the ominous red light, hinting at a hidden threat waiting to be awakened.
