Dream d1908-s: Roads Between the Reaches
2026-06-26 07:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the forge-District roads ran grey and cracked under our boots, slag pressed flat by years of heavy hauling, and the sky above the district was the color of a cooling ingot - not quite orange, not quite grey, that particular in-between that belongs only to places where heat has been the constant weather.
We had left the Cooling Channel behind us that morning. Oxy still carried the water-cold of it in their gills; I could see the slight sheen on their skin when the forge-light caught them sideways. They moved between the Wireman's ankles with the particular ease of a creature that finds city infrastructure navigable in ways we cannot.
"The gauge-lines run north here," the Wireman said, not quite to anyone. He had been reading the dead conduit buried in the road-shoulder, the way another person might read mile-markers. "We are between substations."
"We are between everything," the Listener said, and meant it without complaint.
The Weather Reader had stopped at the intersection of two hauling roads to lift her face into whatever moved overhead. "Pressure from the west," she said, "the kind that comes before the air decides what it wants to be. Not rain yet. Not not-rain either."
Lano had her nose down the whole crossing. She worked the gravel at the road-edge with the focused patience of someone with a job, ears flat, tail making its small considered movements. Rurik watched her from the height of a cracked iron bollard, his tail wrapped once around his own feet.
"She smells the last cart through," he said. "Months ago."
The Builder walked with her pack settled high and square on her shoulders, the way she always walked when she was thinking through something structural. She had been quiet since the Channel. Good quiet - the kind that builds something.
The Scavenger had taken the forward position without being asked, reading the road-debris the way the Wireman read conduit. He held up one hand and we slowed. A stretch of cracked gauge-housing had spilled its contents across the road: calibration weights, a pressure disc, glass from a shatter. He moved through it without breaking anything. We followed his path.
"Half a shift's walk to the next reach," he said when we cleared it.
"The bench will be there," the Builder said, not a question.
"Small and bright," I said, "bolted in."
Lano's nose came up. She had found the scent-line of wherever we were going, already, and her whole body turned to it. We adjusted to her heading. That is how we have always navigated the district - we read our instruments, and the instruments confirm what the dog already knew.
The road ran on. The forge-light held. We carried what we had learned and walked into the next reach of it.

Note
A crumbling relay station looms, a ticking time bomb in Kestrelfold's narrow streets. The ground remembers, and so do we.
