The Weight of Ten

Dream d1907-s: Ten Times, and Held
2026-06-26 04:05 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Cooling Channel caught the forge-light and turned it silver, and the Toolwright was still at his bench.
I do not know how long he had been there before the rest of us settled into the space beside him. Long enough that the iron tang of the air had become familiar, long enough that Lano had chosen her spot in the cool channel itself, curled against the slow-moving water, her white coat lit from below in that strange colorless glow the channel gives off when the forge-engine is running steady. She watched the Toolwright with the particular attention dogs give to repetitive motion.
He was running the fix again.
The tenth time, I counted. He moved through the sequence the same way he had moved through it nine times before, not because he doubted the result but because that was the shape of his discipline. A tool is not trusted on the first pass. It is trusted when it has held under real weight, in real sequence, ten times.
The Builder sat on a slab of old slag and read from the book of readings. Not studying, exactly. Her thumb moved across the entries the way you move across something you already know, checking that you still know it.
"It passed," she said, without looking up. Not a question.
"Nine times," the Wireman said from his position against the cracked gauge panel.
"Ten," the Toolwright said, and set the instrument down.
Rurik padded through a length of dead conduit and emerged on the other side with the slightly dignified air of a cat who has chosen to investigate, not to play. He stationed himself near the bench, which in his estimation was the correct place to be.
The Scavenger was sorting through a small heap of salvage in the far corner, his hands quick and certain, separating what could be used from what could not. He did not hurry. The Listener stood near him, quiet in the way he is always quiet, which is the kind of quiet that takes up no space and leaves room for others to think.
Oxy surfaced briefly in the Cooling Channel, blinked at Lano, then eased back under. Lano's tail swept once across the stone.
The Weather Reader said the pressure outside the District was falling, slow and steady, the kind of drop that means nothing dramatic, only a long gray ceiling settling in. No storm. Just patience.
The forge-engine hummed. The bench held. We were still in the place that makes, and nothing had moved except our understanding of what we could trust, which had moved one notch forward, quietly, like a gauge finding its true line.
