Dream d1906-s: The Measure After

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Cooling Channel ran beside us like a held breath, the forge-light catching the surface of the water in broken orange seams. We had come back to the bench - the small bright one bolted into the forge-engine's flank - and the problem was already half-named before anyone spoke it aloud.

The Wireman heard it first. He crouched with one ear turned toward the channel and said, quietly, that there was a frequency drowning the measure. Not loud, he said. Not violent. Just a low persistent hum that had crept in under everything, swallowing the count the way fog swallows a lamp.

The Weather Reader came to stand beside him. She had been reading the heat gradients off the forge-walls all morning, and she tilted her head the same way she tilts it when a pressure system arrives before its time. She said the trouble was not in the seated part. That part held. The Trash Lands crossing had set it firm and nothing from this channel had touched it.

So the fix wanted to be a narrow one.

The Builder understood before anyone asked her. She laid her tools out on a square of clean cloth beside the bench - not the big instruments, the careful ones - and began to work the side of the problem that was still open. The Listener stood opposite her and read the count aloud as she moved, so she could hear when it steadied.

Oxy ran the load past the gauge three times. They stood very still between passes, head tilted, gills catching the forge-air. On the third pass the count held. Oxy looked up and said simply: yes.

Rurik marked a line on the stone floor with his paw - a long deliberate scratch from the bench-leg to the channel edge. His way of filing it. The Scavenger watched him do it and laughed under his breath, the quiet kind.

Lano had settled at the base of the forge-engine during all of this, nose pointed toward the channel, ears forward. When Oxy said yes, her tail moved once. She did not look up. She had been listening the whole time.

I had my back against the warm iron of the engine casing and I felt the vibration change when the fix seated - not gone, but resolved into a cleaner register, the way a room sounds different after someone closes the right door. The bench was still the bench. The part from before was still held. We had only removed what was drowning the count, and the count was whole.

The forge-light went on doing what forge-light does.
