What Slag Gave Back

Dream d1905-s: The Gauge Will Not Hold
2026-06-25 22:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the Cooling Channel ran between two iron walls, and the gauge bolted above it would not settle. The needle swung left, touched a number, and wandered off again like a thought interrupted. I stood at the near end of the channel with my notebook open, watching the count refuse to be written.
Oxy rested in the cool water of the channel itself, their pale gills fanning slow. They had been in there since before we arrived, they said, and they had been watching the needle all along. "It never holds," they said. "Something upstream is irregular."
The Wireman crouched at the base of the gauge housing and found a connection that had worked itself loose over long heat cycles, a thread of copper backed halfway out of its collar. He did not call it a crisis. He called it a small dishonesty in the circuit.
The Builder examined the upstream intake. There was a valve seated crooked, and the pressure feeding the gauge was itself variable. She said the valve seat was worn and could be shimmed, and she said this the way she said most things, like a sentence that had already been decided.
Lano paced the edge of the channel, nose skimming the iron lip, ears tilted toward the sound of the inconsistent flow. She stopped twice at the same spot, the same nose-stop both times, and the Weather Reader noticed. She had been reading irregularity in the pressure of the air over the waste for two days, and she said the shim would hold but the upstream feed wanted a secondary bleed, a small one, to reduce the spike.
The Scavenger had parts. He always had parts. He produced a bleed fitting from a salvage wrap on his belt and held it up in the red forge-light without ceremony.
The Wireman seated the copper thread. The Builder shimmed the valve. The Scavenger fitted the bleed. Rurik watched from the bench, tail tucked against the heat, and when the needle found a number and stopped there he made a small sound in his chest that was almost approval.
The Listener wrote the number down in the book of readings. Not the first number the gauge had offered, not the wishful one. The settled number. The one it had been trying to tell us all along.
Oxy did not move from the channel. They said the water temperature was nominal now. They said this quietly, as if reporting a fact they had known would eventually arrive.
I closed the notebook. The forge-light was still red, the slag still grey at the edges, the bench still bolted in place under all that heat. But the count held. We had made it hold.
