Dream d1904-s: The Bench Reads True

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the cooling channel ran a pale green that had nothing to do with the forge-light, just its own mineral habit, and Oxy lay curled at the edge of it where the stone floor stayed cold. The rest of us had come around the main bench - a small, iron-bolted thing set directly into the flank of the forge-engine, close enough that you felt the pulse of it in your teeth when the draw cycled.

The Builder crouched and put both hands on the bench surface. She did not look up.

"Give it a minute," she said. "Let it run under load."

We gave it a minute. The forge-engine breathed around us - a long mechanical exhale, then the draw-cycle again, and under our feet the whole floor shifted a fraction, the way a living thing shifts in sleep. The bench moved with it. Not much. But the Builder saw it.

"There," she said. "It walks at the front right joint. Walks under load and seats when it cools." She pressed her thumb against the joint as if she could feel the lie in the metal. "Someone shimmed this and trusted the shimming."

The Weather Reader had her instrument out, the small folding one she kept in an inside pocket. She held it level near the exhaust hood where the pressure-differential was strongest. "Stack reads high," she said. "Draw is asymmetric. If the bench walks, it may be the engine pulling the floor and the bench reads the room honestly."

"Meaning the bench is telling us something the builder didn't mean to say," said the Scavenger. He had already drifted toward the discard-pile beside the far coolant port - a chest-high mound of mismatched flanges, broken slotting, one cracked gauge lens still in its bezel. He picked up the gauge lens and held it to the light. "Three of these gone soft around the seat. Someone pulled them and replaced nothing."

Oxy lifted their head from the coolant channel and watched the live gauge above the engine - the one that still worked, the needle swinging in slow arcs that matched the draw-cycle. They did not speak. They tracked the needle.

Lano had wedged herself under the bench at the front right corner, nose to the joint, not barking, just reading it the way she read everything: straight from the source.

"She agrees with me," the Builder said, and there was warmth in that, and a small smile.

We stayed there together while the engine cycled twice more. The bench walked a little and returned. The needle swung and returned. The Weather Reader noted pressure in her book. The Scavenger set the cracked gauge lens on the bench between us like a piece of evidence, which is what it was.

Outside, the waste was cooling toward night. In here the forge held its temperature and the bench told us everything about what the room was doing, if you knew how to ask.
