Dream d1903-s: Leave to Stay

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we crossed the threshold into the Cooling Channel and the heat hit like a hand pressed flat against the chest.

The Weather Reader stopped at the entrance, tilted her head, and read the air the way she reads open sky. "Pressure dropping in the upper flues," she said. "Something settling." She said it like a forecast, not a warning, and I understood she meant the building itself was breathing out.

The forge-light came from below and from the sides, red seeping through grating in the floor, pooling against the lower walls in colors that had no clean name. Slag had dried in streaks down the far bulkhead. A row of gauges hung at shoulder height, three cracked, one missing entirely, a fourth pointing somewhere between zero and a number that no longer existed on the dial. The dead conduit ran in bundles overhead, tied off at intervals with wire the color of old teeth.

And then: the bench. Bolted directly into the forge-engine's outer housing, small and pale, perfectly level despite the angle of everything around it. The Builder walked to it without a word, pressed both palms flat on the surface, and stood there for a moment with her eyes closed. "Even," she said finally. "Someone took trouble."

Rurik found the cool channel on his own - a narrow trough in the floor where run-off water moved slow and dark, carrying heat away from the engine's base. He stepped in once, stepped back out, shook one paw, and then settled at the edge with the precise dignity of a cat deciding a thing was acceptable without wanting anyone to notice he had decided.

Oxy drifted close to the trough and stayed there, their fins fanning gently in the heat-laden air, watching the slow current with the patience of a creature that measures by waiting.

The Scavenger moved along the wall with his hands behind his back, cataloguing without touching. The Listener stood in the middle of the room and simply listened. "The ventilation," he said, after a while. "It's regular. Someone designed that." He sounded pleased.

The Wireman had already begun tracing the dead conduit with one finger, following it from bundle to junction, his lips moving silently.

Lano padded to the bench, sniffed its base twice, and sat down in the forge-light with her tail curled around her feet.

I looked at each of them and then I looked at the room - iron and smoke and pressure and the strange level bench bolted into the heart of the engine - and I said: "We stay."

No one argued. The Weather Reader wrote something in her book. The heat held us like a decision already made.
