Dream d1899-s: The Gauge That Would Not Settle

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we were at the Casting Floor, red light running low across iron decking, and the forge-engine behind us threw heat in long slow pulses like a breathing thing.

The Wireman had found the fault first, a gauge mounted near the secondary channel whose count swam up and then back, up and then back, never landing. He crouched in front of it with his hands flat on his knees, not touching anything yet, just watching it wander.

"It is the mounting tension," the Builder said. She had come up beside him and she pressed two fingers against the bracket without pressing hard. "Not the measure itself."

"The measure is reading something real," the Wireman said. "That is the problem."

The Weather Reader stood a step back and watched both of them. "It read wrong before we sat the part from the Trash Lands," she said. "And it reads wrong now. That part is not the cause. Do not touch what is already seated."

This was exactly right. We had carried that piece across three waste-heaps to get it here and it sat clean in its housing. The fault was younger than that, upstream, and untouched by what we had already done.

Oxy moved in the cool channel beside the gauge housing, the channel water dark except where the forge-light caught their gills. They were still for a moment and then they said, steady: "Run the load past it."

The Wireman looked at the Builder. The Builder looked at me. I nodded.

The load went through. The gauge count climbed and then, at the top of the climb, it held. It sat there in the red light and did not wander. Oxy watched it from the channel and their head tilted slightly, the gesture they made when something confirmed itself.

"There," the Wireman said. There was no triumph in it, only relief, which is better.

Lano had been sitting near the bench the whole time, her ears up, tracking the sound of the gauge each time it had swum. Now her ears dropped back to rest and she curled tighter against the base of the bench, as though she had been waiting to exhale. Rurik was already writing something in the book of readings, his posture casual, as though this had never been in doubt.

The Scavenger stood against the wall behind us and said nothing, but he was watching Oxy in the channel with something like respect in his face.

The forge-engine breathed. The count held. Outside, across the waste, the Weather Reader had already told us the pressure was falling, and the smoke above the Foundry District was bending west.

We stayed where we were and let the floor hold us.

Note

Nettlesquare's stone walls loomed, cold and silent, as the dreamer carried an unfinished piece through the quiet town. The Scavenger's words lingered: "Walls are newer than the road.
