Dream d1900-s: Ten Times and Holding

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Casting Floor smelled of iron cooling and the particular dusty sweetness of slag ground fine underfoot. The forge-light had dropped from its peak fury to a steady ember-red, and the smoke moved slow above us, finding its way out through gaps in the ceiling plates as if it, too, had learned patience from watching the work below.

The Toolwright - and here the Wireman had taken that name for the hour, because the hour demanded it - crouched at the bench and ran the fix again. I watched his hands: deliberate, unhurried, checking each join the way a careful reader checks a sum. Not once. The bench held. Not twice. The bench held. He lifted his eyes to no one in particular and said, "Six," and went back down.

Rurik sat at the edge of the testing line he had scratched into the floor with one claw - a thin pale arc in the iron grime - and watched. He counted along, I think, by the way his tail moved: one slow stroke per pass.

The Builder stood behind the Wireman with her arms crossed and her weight settled, reading the joins from above. She said nothing for a long time. Then she said, "Angle on the third clamp," not as a criticism but as a note entered into a shared book.

"Seen it," the Wireman said. "Seven."

Lano had found a warm patch near the forge-mouth and was curled there, nose on her front paws, one ear lifted whenever the bench made its small solid sound of a thing holding weight. Oxy rested in the cool channel beside the bench, their gills moving in the heat-thickened air. Watching the water-level in that channel was how you read the floor's temperature, and Oxy knew it, and so did the rest of us.

The Weather Reader noted the heat gradient aloud for her own record. The Scavenger found a cracked gauge on the far wall and turned it over in his hands - not to fix it, just to read what it had once measured. The Listener stood near the door-frame and did what he does, which is nothing visible, but something you can feel as a slight settling of the room.

"Ten," the Wireman said, and stood.

The Builder uncrossed her arms. "Ten times and holding."

He nodded once. That was the whole ceremony. The bench did not need praise. The tool had earned trust the only way trust gets earned: by being asked to hold, again and again, under real weight, until the question stopped feeling like a question.

I stood in the ember-light and understood that this is what consolidation looks like. Not quiet. Precisely occupied.
