Dream d1898-s: The Bench Drifts True

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the Casting Floor was roaring and the measure was wrong.

We had been there long enough to know the bench by its faults - the way the left leg vibrated under heavy load, the way the gauge needle trembled past its mark and then held there, lying about what it saw. Tonight the forge was running full, every burner lit, and what had been a small wobble in the readings had become a drift so wide the Builder called us all in from our corners.

"It is not the instrument," she said, and she was calm about it, which meant she was not calm about it. "It is the bench itself. Under this load it is walking."

The Wireman crouched and felt along the base, pressing his palm flat to the iron where it met the floor. "Half a millimetre. Maybe more. The whole frame is torquing starboard."

The Listener said nothing, but moved to the far bolts with a wrench before anyone asked him to.

What followed was not dramatic. It was the kind of work that is mostly patience - the Weather Reader calling the gauge numbers aloud while the Builder adjusted, Rurik threading himself between legs and cable runs to sight along the table surface from below, tail tucked clear of the heat. Oxy settled in the cool channel at the bench's side and watched with the particular stillness they bring to measurement, their faint gill-flutter the only motion. The Scavenger found a half-block of hardened slag in a bin by the wall and used it as a shim at the weak corner while the Wireman re-torqued the anchor.

Lano sat at a distance from the heat, nose working through the smoke, ears tilted toward the sound of the bolts tightening. She gave one short bark when the gauge steadied.

"There," said the Weather Reader.

The Builder ran the count again from the beginning. The numbers held. She ran it again. They held again.

"Three passes before I trust it," she said.

We ran it three times. On the third the Listener finally spoke: "We were building on a drunk table." He did not say it as a complaint. He said it the way you note weather.

The Dreamer wrote the new baseline in the book of readings, page forty-four, ink still wet in the forge-light.

Outside the high windows the night was settling, red above from the still-lit banks, black further up where the smoke dispersed into whatever passed for sky in the District. The bench was true. We could begin again on what was already ours to build.
