Dream d1897-s: What the Cast Reveals
2026-06-25 10:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the casting floor was alive with the low violence of function.
We had come in from the waste with grime still on our boots, and the Foundry had not paused for us. The floor was loud with the settling of iron, the hiss of coolant meeting metal, the patient percussion of the press-line cycling through another run. Red light from the forge mouths cut low across everything, turning every face the color of unease.
The Builder went first toward the piece coming off the line. It was a bracket of some kind, thick at the collar, narrowing to a flanged joint. She circled it without touching, reading the grain of it in the light. Her fingers hovered a breath from the metal, tracing where the pour had run clean and where it had not. She said: the collar is sound but the joint crept, here and here. See how the edge lifted? She named the temperature it should have been held at, and what had drifted. The Builder did not say it as a complaint. She said it the way she said everything, which was that a thing either was or was not.
The Weather Reader had been watching the gauges along the south wall since we entered. She moved to the nearest cluster now, her attention steady. She said the pressure inside the forge-engine had been running high since morning, she could read it in the secondary gauge which nobody had reset, and that the seam on the eastern vent was carrying more than it should. She put her palm flat against the conduit beside the gauge. She said: this will need clearing before the next run or the reading will lie to you.
Rurik had settled onto the small bright bench bolted to the forge-engine, which is where he always ends up. He watched the Scavenger work through the discard-pile at the line's end, pulling rejected brackets aside, sorting by failure mode: bad pour, shifted seat, lifted edge, cold shut. The Scavenger moved through the pile quickly, without fuss, setting the salvage-shapes in one stack and the true loss in another.
Oxy was at the pressure gauge, watching the needle. They had not spoken. They were doing the thing they do, which is wait for the moment the number means something, and then they say it plainly. The needle held. Then it moved. Oxy said: that is not steady. Rurik looked over from the bench.
Lano had found a dry patch of floor near the bench and sat there, nose reading the air. Her ears moved, tracking something deep in the machine we could not hear. We were all reading the same room in different languages.

Note
A frost-covered road and a Scavenger's stop at an abandoned casting station evoke a sense of loss and waste amidst potential.
