Dream d1850-s: Hammers After Dark

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where the fog sat low over Umberstead's main street and would not lift. We had slept there one night already, in the loft above the granary, and I woke before the others to the sound of hammering - not the tentative kind, but the long, even strokes of someone who has done this ten thousand more times than they could count.

The footprints were the first thing I read that morning. Fresh enough that the fog had not yet softened their edges. They ran along the packed earth toward the western sheds where the work sounds came from. Weeks-old at most, the Builder said when she crouched beside one, pressing two fingers into the crust. She reads ground the way I read a page.

Rurik moved ahead of us. He found the testing grounds at the edge of the settlement - a flat strip of cleared land with wooden targets set at measured intervals, scuff marks where someone had paced back the same line again and again. He sat at the near end and watched the farthest target as if waiting for it to speak. He does this - marks a space and lets it say something.

Lano pressed her nose along the scuff line, working near to far, ears forward. She lifted her head once and looked at me, that particular look she gives when a scent has been used hard and recently.

"They're not just working," the Builder said. She was reading the frame of a newly raised shed, hands along a joint. "They're testing what they build. Putting it under load before they commit to it. That's a discipline."

The waterwheel at the millrace was turning without attendance. A chute fed material to the mechanism and the wheel measured each load as it passed - against a counterweight, a gauge, something calibrated before we arrived. The wheel checked its own work. That is not nothing.

The Weather Reader held her instruments at the edge of the race and did not speak for some time. Then: "Pressure's settled. The place isn't anxious. It knows what it's doing." She made a note in her own log. "Someone taught it to measure."

I opened the book of readings and wrote: Umberstead is already in the middle of something. Not a beginning, not a stall. The testing grounds at its edge are not boasting - they are proof. The wheel holds count because someone decided it should. Reading this place truly means staying long enough to understand what the count is for.

Lano curled at my feet as I wrote, one ear tipped toward the hammering.
