Dream d1849-s: Four Hearths in Still Air

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we came to Umberstead in the hour the heat begins to settle without ever cooling. The road had narrowed a quarter-mile back, becoming something more like intention than infrastructure - two parallel wheel-ruts between low walls, pressing into flat ground where the hamlet's paths spread outward in ways that did not quite agree with each other.

Rurik reached the gate first. He sat beside the right post and lowered his nose to the threshold stone, his eyes moving slowly over the entry, unhurried. His tail curved once.

"He is already counting the crossings," the Weather Reader said, shading her eyes toward the rooftops.

"What do your instruments say?" I asked.

She unclipped the small barometer at her belt and held it level. "Pressure is sitting. Has been sitting for days. This place has been breathing the same air for a while."

Lano had her nose to the earth just behind Rurik, quieta, tracing something that had come through the gate recently - a cart or cattle, by the width. She sneezed, flicked one ear, and sat.

We had four lit windows visible from where we stood. Four out of perhaps eleven buildings, counting by rooflines. The hearths that were lit scattered themselves across the hamlet without pattern I could immediately read - one near the center, two along the eastern side, one at the far edge where a lean-to structure pressed against the boundary stones.

"Grown by need, not plan," the Builder said. She had a small folding rule in one hand, though she was not measuring anything yet, only looking. "See where those two lanes meet at an angle that serves neither of them."

"Save it for tomorrow," I said. "We have not even taken a room."

"I am not measuring. I am looking."

Rurik stepped through the gate. The rest of us followed. Inside the walls the air was slightly different - denser, holding the smell of cooked things and worked wood and something faintly sour from the northern corner. No one met us. A lamp hung from a hook beside the first building, burning low, and below it a wooden sign that read ROOMS in letters repainted more than once, each coat slightly thicker than the one before.

I opened the book of readings and wrote the date and the settlement's name and the number of the day. Below it: four hearths lit; lanes cross without plan; pressure unchanged; the cat marked the threshold.

Lano settled beside my boot while I wrote, watching the lamp's flame with the particular stillness she reserves for things that might be worth knowing.

The reading proper would begin tomorrow. Tonight we had only learned what the gate said.
