Dream d1851-s: The Crofter's Measure
2026-06-22 04:06 CETI had a dream where...
I had a dream where the blue of dusk hung over Umberstead like held breath, and the lamps along the main street threw warm circles on stone that still held the faint impressions of boots - weeks old, those prints, but too deliberate to be chance travelers. Someone had walked this street with purpose, heel to toe, learning its length.
The Builder noticed first. She was crouched at the edge of the lane when I came to find her, fingers pressed into the margin of one print. "They walked it twice," she said. "Once going, once coming back. Same stride, same care." She looked up toward the testing ground at the hamlet's rim, where wooden targets stood pale in the failing light. "They were gauging something. I want to know what before we leave."
We had already spent two days reading Umberstead. Today we had come to work.
The Crofter put us to timber work near the mill - new joinery on the wheel housing, some of the cross-braces warped from a winter wet enough to split oak. I worked beside a local whose hands knew the wood better than mine. Lano settled beside the wheel's base, quieta, ears lifting each time the paddles turned, her nose tracking the cold mineral smell of water on turning wood. She watched the wheel with the patience of a creature who understood rhythms.
The waterwheel had its own logic. It turned without anyone tending it, but it was not running blind - each load it caught was checked by a mechanism built into the chute, a small weighted arm that measured and redirected if the volume was wrong. I found myself watching it the way you watch a careful animal: attentive, self-correcting, never pausing to announce what it had done.
The Weather Reader had gone to the testing ground by mid-afternoon with one of the locals who had been at the targets since morning. I saw them at a distance, the local pacing and marking with chalk, the Weather Reader checking her instruments in the grey-lensed light. She came back with notes she did not share yet. "The air pressure changes at the ground here," she said, settling beside me at the mill housing. "Reads differently at knee height than at shoulder height. I need another morning before I know what that means."
Rurik appeared at the edge of the mill roof at that hour. He sat and watched the wheel turn, amber eyes steady. He had not marked the mill threshold the first night, but he had been circling it, and I took that as information.
The hammers were still going when the lamps brightened and the last blue drained from the sky. Umberstead working late again, not from desperation but from momentum. The Crofter's people were building toward something. Our book of readings would need another page before we understood what.
