Dream d1846-s: River Mist, Unread Signal

I had a dream where...

I had a dream where we reached Quillmoss in the last grey hour before full dark, the mist off the river so thick it muffled our footsteps on the old stone approach. The gate stood open, not broken, just open, the way a place stands when no one has come or gone in a long time and the hinges have ceased to matter.

The Builder ran her finger along the gatepost coursework. "Good joins," she said, more to herself than to us.

The settlement had the shape of order: halls in their proper rows, a square that might once have been a market, rain-cisterns sealed against debris. We walked the main passage in single file and read the place with our feet before we read it with instruments.

The Weather Reader unslung her barometer. "Pressure's unsettled. Something moving east that the river isn't accounting for. I'll know more by morning."

Rurik found the inn before we did. Stone structure, covered porch, roof intact, a hearth someone had banked seasons ago and never returned to. He sat at the threshold and waited until we had all passed inside, then crossed last and sat facing out. That is how he marks a place as ours for the night.

Lano circled the room once, nose low, then settled near the hearth. She pressed herself flat, head on her paws. Something in her posture was not rest.

We ate cold from our packs while the fire came up. I opened my book to a fresh page and wrote: Quillmoss. Day one. Arrival.

The Builder had set her field receiver on the table between us. She uses it for the acoustic signature of load-paths, the groan of stressed stone in new places. Now she was watching it instead of eating.

"That shouldn't be there," she said.

The signal it was showing was not the low architectural murmur she listens for. Something else. Rhythmic in a way that matched no beacon pattern she knew.

"Can you triangulate it?"

"I don't have a reference point." She turned the receiver slowly. "It's not on any register I carry."

The Weather Reader crossed to the window and looked out at the mist and the dark hall-rows of Quillmoss. "The cisterns," she said. "Or not the cisterns." She didn't finish.

Lano rose from the hearth. Her ears went flat. She barked once at the open doorway, at the mist beyond it, one sharp note. Then silence.

Rurik had not shifted from the threshold. His amber eyes stayed open.

I wrote a second line in the book. Extraño. The shape of this place is orderly and right. What moves in its air is neither.
